    NEWS RELEASE
    Exhibition: 相. PHASE
Venue: Chinese American Arts Council, Gallery 456
Location: 3F, 456 Broadway, New York, NY 10013
    Opening Reception: Friday, 9/3, 6pm-8pm
    Dates: 9/3-9/30, 2010
NEW YORK, AUGUST, 18, 2010- 相 (PHASE) brings together three Chinese photographers
whose outside disciplines bring unique angles to their work: a floral designer, a journalist, and an
actor, each with an interest in specific aspects of nature and humanity that they explore through
their shared media. In the spirit of the double meaning of “相,” as both a portrait or picture and a
mutual relationship or influence, the work of these three artists offer images that suggest a
dynamism and ambiguity behind the frame.
    Artist Biography
    Zhang Wu
A journalist and television anchor with an interest in community activism, Zhang Wu is a street
photographer with firsthand experience both behind the camera and in the midst of the story.
Having grown up entirely in the urban environments of Fuzhou, capitol of Fujian Province and
New York City, his urge to explore rural America led him on a rambling cross-country road trip
with photographer Huang Jue, from New York to San Francisco, in March 2010. With a keen
sense of place, people, and the stories behind them, Zhang’s work evokes the nuances of everyday
humanity and the landscapes that shape it. He collects his work on a blog, tenth.blogbus.com.
    Ta Chi Chen
Currently an influential floral designer, Ta Chi Chen turned his artistic vision into a luxury flower
business after pursuing graduate school in New York as a film major. His unique observation and
sensitivity to nature translate into his work as sculptural, lively and elegant art pieces that can
only be treasured for a duration of time. Combining floral design with mixed-media, his work
explores the form and time of nature. “Under the frame, these organic objects continuously
interpret their life in every isolated moment, and one particular image is picked up by whoever
    sees it.” says Chen.
    Huang Jue
Huang Jue is a photographer and actor based in Beijing. Through acting and playing many
different roles on the screen, he has developed an empathy for the lives of others and an interest
in the details that reveal one’s character. Along with photographer Zhang Wu, he traveled across
the United States in hopes of catching glimpses of the American Dream, or its remnants. His
work selects compelling moments from these travels, capturing details with sensitivity rather than
    sentimentality.
